Vintage Indigo Quilts and Pillows
These are really cool. They are made with this radical hand loomed indigo dyed cotton fabric from Burkina Faso in West Africa. The vintage cotton distresses like denim giving each piece so much character, and they are SOOOO soft!
West African indigo has been traded for centuries. Burkina Faso textile producers maintained the use of natural indigo long after synthetic dyes became available. I purchased all of this cloth from a textile vendor from Mali. I find it really exciting to be participating in such a rich living textile history.

This pillow is made with vintage indigo dyed cotton from Burkina Faso in West Africa. You can really see the hand of the weaver in each piece. The cotton fades and distresses like denim, plus its unbelievably soft. I paired them with complimentary fabrics from my collection. In this pillow, I paired the African indigo with some indigo cotton from Japan. They look fantastic together. There are such rad indigo traditions in so many places around the globe, very chic to bring two of them together here.
All of my pillows are made with 2nd hand fabrics sourced from the fashion and interior design industries as well as vintage shops and estate sales. This way I get fabrics unavailable to anyone else and give some rad old fabrics a new life for you to love! The fabrics may carry a visual history of their previous life (wear marks in a pair of old jeans or the red wine stain of a linen tablecloth). These choices are intentional, showing the character of the journey of the fabric.
The face of this pillow is made with vintage cotton. The back pillow is made with preshrunk cotton canvas. Filled with duck feather pillow. Machine washable on cold and gentle. Do not dryclean.

When I got all of these African textiles, some were in pretty rough shape. But the most beat up pieces had the best color, perfect for patchwork. This pillow is an awesome applique collage of some destroyed fabrics, all reinforced and stabilized to stop them from crumbling.

This size is big enough to go atop a queen bed and perfect for you to curl up with another adult.
I love this quilt, you should buy it before I change my mind and keep it.
This unique quilt is handmade by me in the central highlands of Washington State. I don’t use patterns and every quilt I make is spontaneous and composed as it is created.
This quilt is made with vintage indigo dyed cotton from Burkina Faso in West Africa. It is very special cloth. You can really see the hand of the weaver in each piece. The cotton fades and distresses like denim, plus its unbelievably soft. This one has an amazing mix of such great indigo colors and textures. Both sides were made to be equally important, there is no front.

All of my quilts are intended to be used. They can of course be hung on a wall but I make them to be slept under or picnicked on top of. I wash the one on my bed yearly in the washing machine on cold and gentle, then line dry it and toss it in the dryer quickly to fluff it. I don't recommend doing it more regularly than this. It is well constructed but still it is handmade. Contains cotton and blended fiber fabrics. 100% cotton mid weight batting. Do not dry clean.
I love everything I make and I hope you do too.

The cotton fades and distresses like denim, plus its unbelievably soft. I paired them with complimentary fabrics from my collection. The blue of this indigo is outrageous. Its almost turquoise. When you are using natural indigo dye and you pull the cloth from the dye bath, initially its a a chartreuse color and as it gets exposed to oxygen it changes before your eyes to aqua, then slowly darkens to become the rich indigo weare all familiar with. The fading in this piece seems to have gone back in time revealing the turquoise within.

The cotton fades and distresses like denim, plus its unbelievably soft. When I got this batch of fabrics, some were so beautifully worn in that they were almost see through! I reinforced the cloth and patched the thin areas using bits of the cloth that was too worn to save. The patchwork made such an amazing texture in this quilt! Both sides were made to be equally important, there is no front.

This pillow is made with vintage hand loomed cotton from Burkina Faso as well as mud cloth from Mali, both in West Africa. You can really see the hand of the weaver in each piece. The mud cloth is the chunkier darker black fabric. The lighter gray fabric was in with the indigo fabrics I bought, doesn’t look like it was ever indigo to me but who knows what it looked like when it was new?! The three African fabrics look stunning together.

I used a strip of this very cool hickory striped cotton in this one, the contrast turned out awesome.

The cotton fades and distresses like denim with such a rad range of blues. I paired them with complimentary fabric from my collection, there is a really beautiful pebbly silk brocade that sets off the cotton wonderfully.

The cotton fades and distresses like denim, plus its unbelievably soft. This one is so cool, sometimes when indigo wears the outer color on the cotton fibers fall away leaving a silver gray color. I made this one with just these silver indigo pieces. Both sides were made to be equally important, there is no front.
