Mudcloth Lap Quilt
45 × 60"
This size is perfect for you and your sweetie to curl up under on the sofa or to wear over your shoulders at a new years day parade.
This unique quilt is handmade by me in the central highlands of Washington State. I don’t use patterns and every quilt I make is spontaneous and composed as it is created.
This one is great. For this series of smaller quilts, i wanted to make something more simple with fewer construction hours so I could keep the cost low while not skimping on quality of materials or craftsmanship. These are fantastic textiles, hand loomed mudcloth from Mali. The rich brown blacks of these cottons are achieved with a fermented iron rich mud dye giving them a distinctive look. The fabric has a fantastic and a chunky texture heft while still so soft! While often wildly patterned, I chose mud cloths with a more minimal patterning and paired them with some rad fabrics from my collection. I paired this one with some awesome hand dyed lightweight linen and some chunky upholstery weight cotton.
All of my quilts are made with 2nd hand fabrics sourced from the fashion and interior design industries as well as vintage shops and estate sales. This way I get fabrics unavailable to anyone else and give some rad old fabrics a new life for you to love! The fabrics may carry a visual history of their previous life (wear marks in a pair of old jeans or the red wine stain of a linen tablecloth). These choices are intentional, showing the character of the journey of the fabric.
All of my quilts are intended to be used. They can of course be hung on a wall but I make them to be slept under or picnicked on top of. I wash the one on my bed yearly in the washing machine on cold and gentle, then line dry it and toss it in the dryer quickly to fluff it. I don't recommend doing it more regularly than this. It is well constructed but still it is handmade. Contains cotton, linen and blended fiber fabrics. 100% cotton mid weight batting. Do not dry clean.
I love everything I make and I hope you do too.
