Often when I’m starting a new quilt I will make a loose sketch to organize my mind. This is how I establish rhythms and patterns for how the fabrics could be organized before I start to cut. I really like these drawings so I decided to elevate them by reimagining them as prints.
The prints were made my carving in to a block of linoleum, the same material bathroom floors are often covered in but with out looking like 70s faux tile. Ink is rolled on to the flat surface of the linoleum. Any areas that have been carved away will not hold ink so you’ll see the paper. Like a more involved rubber stamp.
Paper is carefully placed onto the block and rolled through a printing press transferring the ink to the paper, creating an original piece of art. The physicality and richness of a relief print is something that just isn’t possible with a digital print. Each print is in an edition of 10 printed in deep olive kaki color on light bone gray cotton rag paper.
